All the rules for serving wine may sound fussy, but there is something to understanding and following the best wine serving temperatures.
Optimal temperature for other beverages
Drinking other beverages at the most enjoyable temperature seems to come second nature to us. Think about your favorite beverage…maybe a soda, beer, or milk (Can milk be a favorite beverage?). At first sip, any of these beverages are cold and refreshing. Let any of them warm up for a few minutes and the flavors really start to come through. There is a peak timeframe to drink these beverages where they really are the most refreshing and flavorful. Then they can become too warm. You know how that tastes. Warm milk…ick. Warm soda is just all carbonation. Warm beer loses its crispness and becomes a bit flat.
Best temperature for white vs red wine
Wine is no different. Even red wine is best when it is slightly chilled. Think of it on a spectrum. There are optimal temperature ranges for drinking white wine and optimal ranges for red wine.
As shown below, the light white wine should be served the coldest and the most bold, full red wine should be served the warmest.
What is the best way to get wine to the right temperatures?
To serve wine at the best wine serving temperatures, place a white wine in the fridge for 1 hour before serving and place a red wine in the fridge for 15-30 minutes.
If you’ve stored the white wine in the refrigerator, then pull it out about 30 minutes before serving to allow it to warm up. You can place it in a marble or ceramic wine chiller. We usually keep ours in the freezer so it is always ready to go. We also use a wine cooler sleeve that we keep in the freezer too. These are similar to ice packs that you can slip right over the bottle.
